DOWNSTATE DOMINATES IN 1ST NYS ALL-STAR FOOTBALL CLASSIC – 36-7

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Downstate Senior Football All-Stars left no doubt which half of the state rules the gridiron world right now as they blew out the Upstate All-Stars 36-7 in the inaugural New York State High School Football Classic Sunday at the Carrier Dome.

Downstate only led 9-0 at halftime but increased the margin to 19-0 going into the fourth quarter then put the game away with two interception returns for touchdowns.

Corcoran senior Travon Burke was one of the few bright spots for the Upstate team, scoring its lone touchdown on a short run and recovering a fumble to help earn the Most Valuable Defensive Lineman award.

The Elite Combine took place during the morning at East Syracuse Minoa High School.  More than 200 players who qualified attended from all across NYS.   Due to the rain most of the combine was moved inside the school.   All of the players were invited after qualifying at regional combines set up by the NYSHSFCA during May.   They were also introduced before half-time of the Upstate/Downstate Classic game in the Carrier Dome.

FAIRPORT AND SHENENDEHOWA COMBINES A SUCCESS

Close to 320 football players from around the state attended the May 2nd Combines held in Clifton Park and Fairport this past weekend. The players tested in the 40 yd dash, 3 cone drill, Pro-Shuttle, Long Jump , Vertical Jump, Bench Press and had their height and weight checked. Each player received a total score based on the specific tests mentioned above and relating to their football position. There was a sliding scale of 10 to 0 a player could earn by test and their performance. All players who had a score of 28 or higher will be invited to the June 6th Upstate/Down State Elite Combine in Syracuse. They will be tested again and compete against the top in the state. In addition, they will be guests at the 1st Annual Upstate/Downstate All-Star Football Classic at the Carrier Dome and will be introduced at halftime as the future of NYS football. Players should look for their invitations at home or at school over the next week.
